Copper Buddha 2017

In 2017 I coordinated a project to build a large Buddha sculpture made out of copper. The sculpture was designed by OU Vanndy and commissioned by The Royal Sands Resort and Spa, a 5 star resort on Koh Rong island situated near Sihanoukville in southern Cambodia.

OU Vanndy and OUK Chimvichet built the sculpture in Phnom Penh over a period of a few months. Starting with an accurate frame created with steel rods, the copper bands were then moulded to the frame and attached where they crossed over using metal rivets. The steel rods were removed so only the copper bands were left to form the sculpture.

Copper Buddha is approximately 3.5m in height (including the plinth) and was installed in December 2017 ready for the grand opening of the Royal Sands Resort and Spa in early January 2018.
